Do you feel as though you are walking through a valley right now?
You know, where the sun doesn’t shine, the going is rough and tough, the rivers pour down against you, you can’t see what’s ahead of you, or where you are going, and all the rocks and debris of life seems to build up and block the way?
Are you longing to be up on the mountain, where you can see clearly where your destination, or your destiny, lies? Where the sun shines clearly, and the rain just pours away down the side – into the valley – and doesn’t build up and slow you down.
We all have times in our lives, when we are on the mountain top – enjoying the sunshine on our faces, and the breeze in our hair. If you are on the mountain top right now, rejoice and praise God, but prepare for the next valley too!
Because we all have times in our lives, when we go through the valley. And it’s at those times we need to keep going, keep trudging on, keep on keeping on. It’s hard going – but, you know, if you don’t keep going you will get stuck in the valley, and you won’t reach the next mountain top.
When the way through life is unclear, it’s the time to reach out to God – cry out if you need to – because He will clear the way for you.
The message version of Luke 3:5 reads:
“Prepare God’s arrival! Make the road smooth and straight! Every ditch will be filled in, every bump smoothed out, the detours straightened out, all the ruts paved over. Everyone will be there to see the parade of God’s salvation.”
These were the words of John the Baptist, as he was sent to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Maybe it’s what you need to do if you are in the valley – or in a rut – right now:
Prepare, keep going in a straight line and don’t waver or wander. Because when you do, “every ditch will be filled in, every bump smoothed out.”
God will make the way clear to you, as long as you keep going in a straight line, as long as you keep on keeping on.
Every so often, you know, even in the valley, the light will burst forth in a glorious display. And as you walk through the valley of life, God’s light will burst forth in glorious display, to show you the way, to guide your path.
May you look to the light, may you keep on keeping on, so that you find yourself once again on the mountain top – preparing for the next part of your wondrous journey through life. Amen.
